Turkish Double Spiral
2006, watercolor, 18 x 18", by Jenny Badger Sultan
Our trip to Turkey in 2006 was very rich, putting us in touch with many layers of culture and history. On our return I did this watercolor, to remember and absorb some of imagery I had encountered. One arm of the spiral contains the prehistoric layer, with motifs and sculptures from Catalhoyuk, Hacilar and the Hittites; the other arm starts with a contemporary woman in a headscarf and shows tile and textile motifs, Islamic and Byzantine images.
