The Bishop Behind Blood

l972, watercolor, 10 x 14", by Jenny Badger Sultan

The Bishop Behind Blood is an image from a Group Visualization. Henry and I developed this process when we were teaching “New Techniques in Visionary Art.”

A group of us would sit together, in the dark, breathing deeply, going into light trance and concentrating on whatever clear visual images appeared on our inner visual screen. Whoever had the first clear image would describe it and then the rest of us would try to visualize it as well. Then whoever saw a development from that image would describe it, and so on. We would build a journey from these successive images. These were very often deep and moving, and I frequently painted or drew from them.

The Bishop was a strong, stern, judgmental image and carried a lot of power.
